The Ula Fala

The Ula Fala – Pandanus Necklace, made from segments of the Pandanus fruit.

It is worn by Talafale – Orator Chiefs, they are markers of status, the color red is associated with high rank.

When my parents migrated to New Zealand in the 70s, they brought with them beautiful and interesting handmade objects that adorned our home.

Looking back on my childhood,  my mum was an interior designer, my first Art teacher, she took pride in the Ulas – (necklaces) and the way they draped around photo frames, hung high on the living room wall.It was a significant piece from their home in Sāmoa.

The size invokes a sense of Pride in the Sāmoan culture and what it looked like  thru the eyes of an 8 year old.
